May is "Older Americans Month"

Did you know that over one in every eight, or 13.1%, of the population is an older American? The older population (65+) reached 40.4 million in 2010, an increase of 5.4 million or 15.3% since 2000.

In 1963, Older Americans Month was established.  Roughly a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns were growing, however. In April of 1963, President John F. Kennedy's meeting with the National Council of Senior Citizens served as a prelude to designating May as "Senior Citizens Month."
Thanks to President Jimmy Carter's 1980 designation, what was once called Senior Citizens Month, is now called "Older Americans Month," and has become a tradition.

Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since JFK has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs and other activities.

Raine Inc. would like to highlight the Security Travel Pouch in honor of Older Americans Month. #067P – Security Travel Pouch.  http://raineinc.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1523
This pouch offers a great idea for seniors that do a lot of traveling.  It is a secure option for keeping the passport, photo I.D. , boarding pass, travelers checks and etc.  that can all be held in one convenient pouch and is worn around the neck.

Who Uses Maps Anymore?

Times have changed over the years. Believe it or not, soldiers actually used paper maps in the field. Raine Inc. produced (and still does) the finest map cases in the world. They varied in different sizes and shapes to fit the mission. The Individual map case is the smallest 7”x9”. The Squad map case has a larger 15”x14” viewing area and can be folded neatly in a zippered binder that fits the BDU Cargo pocket. The Rolled map case has a much larger 16”x44” viewing area. The Jumbo case speaks for itself. Of course Raine produces the Map Bag that dates back to the 18th century.

Maps are being replaced by GPS devices. Raine has been on the forefront of creating innovative GPS cases for the field. Information cases (i.e. IPad, Iphone, smart phones, I-whatever) are the wave of the modern Army and Raine is on it. Please click here http://raineinc.com/catalog/index.php to find out more info. in our Product Catalog about  Map Cases, GPS cases and Smart Phone Cases.

Keep in mind, when batteries run out, paper always works.  And, we would love to hear about your map stories.

It's a Dog's Life

This is Charlie, Raine’s mascot. He loves coming to work with John, Raine’s President, and hanging out with all of us.   When John is out of the office, Charlie’s favorite hobby is to nap on my lap/desk.  Even the ringing of the telephone will not disturb him.  He just snuggles up in the blanket and sleeps, while I am on the phone or working on the computer.  Now when he hears the front door open – that is another story!  He jumps up to see if it is John coming back in.  If it is, down he goes and back to John’s office for some more attention and maybe another nap.

Raine Inc. does not manufacture any dog or pet related products, but we do offer a wide variety of products for their owners. For a complete list of Raine’s products, go to http://raineinc.com.  Be sure to also check out our Closeout section for some great deals!

April Special Operation Conference

On April 25-26, Raine Inc. will be represented in El Paso, TX for the SOG/MWR show.  This event is primarily for special operators from law enforcement agencies in the southwest part of the country.

It is one day of exhibiting products on Ft. Bliss and a second day showing product at the shooting range on Camp MacGregor.  There is a high number of attendees from the border patrol, and we have a new flashlight holster for them to see.  While we’re there, we  will also spend some time visiting the stores on Ft. Bliss.  If that was all we could do on the trip, it would be worthwhile just to be able to personally tell them “Thank you” for the business they send us.

Today is National Peach Cobbler Day!

To celebrate, we'll share with you Regena's personal recipe:

Regena’s Peach Cobbler
porbital
2 cups of sliced fresh peaches
¼ teaspoon of nutmeg
2 cups of sugar (divided)
½ cup of butter (not margarine)
¾ cup of flour
2 teaspoons of baking powder
A pinch of salt
¾ cup of milk

Heat oven to 350º.  Mix the peaches with 1 cup of sugar and nutmeg then set aside.  Put the butter in a 9” square cake pan or preferably a medium cast iron skillet and put in the oven to melt.  In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of sugar, flour, baking powder, salt and milk.  Mix until smooth.  Pour this over the melted butter.  DO NOT STIR!  Top this with the peaches and again -DO NOT STIR!  It is key that you do not mix any of the layers together.  The batter will rise to the top during baking.
Put in the oven and bake at 350º for about an hour or until golden brown.  Serve with some homemade vanilla ice cream or some fresh whipped cream.

Let us know what you think of the recipe.

It's National Farm Animals Day this Week

Raine Inc. does not miss a year without celebrating National Farm Animals Day. It was not long ago we had a problem with chickens interfering with our air condition compressor. The chickens would escape from our neighbor’s coop and head for our compressor. We do not know why they liked the compressor, whether the heat or noise, the result was feathers sucked onto the compressor. I love chickens but I do not like a hot office.

The neighbor is gone and the chickens are gone, but Raine’s enthusiasm for National Farm Animals Day is still as strong as ever.

Upcoming April Conferences

In April, I will be attending two shows to showcase Raine Inc.’s products.  The first will be the Marine South Expo at Camp LeJeune April 11-12.  This is a smaller version of the Modern Day Marine show Raine participates in September.  I always am pleased to visit Camp LeJeune.  We do our largest volume of Marines business at the stores on that base.  Some of the store managers I have known since my early days at Raine.  We have all had those moments when something happened that we will always remember where we were.  I was just exiting the main gate at LeJeune when the “OJ” verdict came out.  I look forward to spending time talking with our brave Marines.

The next show is for the Special Ops branch of the U.S. Border Patrol.  We will be showcasing a new holster for the Border Patrol Streamlight LED flashlight to show them so I am anxious to get there.  It will be at Ft. Bliss April 25-26.

St. Patrick's Day Fun

We are always looking for a reason to celebrate here at Raine Inc.   This is a tree that sits in our warehouse.  It is decorated in a different theme throughout the year by Diane who is our production assistant/warehouse supervisor.  No matter what the theme may be - the pumpkin head always remains on top though.  Crazy – we know but sometimes you just need a little crazy to make the day more interesting.

By the way,  did you know that Raine Inc. now sells Marine Certified Martial Arts belts?  It is available in Camo Green to go with your “Kiss Me – I’m Irish” t-shirt that you may have hanging in your closet.

Today Just Might Be the Perfect Day!

(siraphat)
When : Always on March 16th

Today is:  "Everything You Do is Right" Day. Life is filled with adventure of ups and downs. Some days are good days. Some days are bad days. Most often, there's both good and bad in any given day.  Every once in a while, a day comes along where everything you do goes well.....the perfect day!

Today is actually the opposite of yesterday which was:  "Everything You Think is Wrong Day" on March 15th. Yes, there is more than understated differences in interpretation and meaning of the two days. But, you get the idea.  Make it a great day for you!

Please note, there is no actual research that found the creator or origin of this day. It was just too good not to share it!

Get Ready to Change Those Clocks!

This Sunday, March 11, we switch from standard to daylight saving time. Daylight saving time (“DST”) is also called summer time or daylight savings time. When DST is not put into place, it is called standard time, normal time or winter time.

Stuart Miles
Clocks get set an hour ahead, meaning a loss of time but more evening hours of daylight.  It may be only an hour, but shifts in sleep schedules can throw off those of us who are already sleep-deprived. That includes many Americans, one-third of who don’t get the 7 to 9 hours of sleep recommended by the National Sleep Foundation, according to recent government data. Chronic lack of sleep is associated with health risks like weight gain, depression and even early death.  Likewise, even in the short term, sleep loss can be a hazard: a 2001 study found that traffic accidents bump up slightly on the Monday following the spring shift to Daylight Saving Time.

Dr. Gina Chen, sleep specialist with The Polyclinic’s Sleep Medicine Center located in Seattle, Washington, recommends you should respect your sleep time and continue to get your usual amount of sleep.  She advises:
  • Reset all of your clocks on the Saturday evening before the switch.
  • Once clocks have been set, go to bed an hour later than usual on Saturday.  In other words, if you usually go to bed at 10 p.m., your clock will say 11 p.m.
  • Get up on Sunday, the first day of daylight saving time, at your usual time (according to your clock).
  • Resist the temptation to take a nap in the middle of the day on Sunday.
  • Go to bed on Sunday at your usual time (according to your clock).
Good luck and be aware of the correct time on Sunday!
