Tips to be Heart Healthy in Honor of Heart day

Do you try to eat healthy and wonder about the right choices to make?

Trythese simple steps to help keep your heart healthy:

1) Fruits and vegetables - Buy and eat plenty offresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. Pick the fruits and vegetables that aredeeply colored throughout – such as spinach, carrots, peaches and berries –tend to be higher in vitamins and minerals than others, such as potatoes andcorn.

When fresh foods aren't available, choose frozenor canned vegetables and fruits in water without added sugars, saturated andtrans fat, or salt.

Buy more fruits and vegetables that are goodsources of fiber, including beans, peas, oranges, bananas, strawberries andapples. Stock up on raw vegetables for snacks such as carrot and celery sticks,broccoli, cherry tomatoes and cauliflower.

For desserts, buy fresh or canned fruits (inwater without added sugars), dried fruit (without added sugars), and gelatinthat contains fruit, instead of baked goods and sweets.

Stay away from buying/drinking lots of fruitjuice. It doesn’t provide the fiber whole fruit does and it’s not as good atsatisfying hunger.

Some cholesterol-lowering medications may interact with grapefruit, grapefruitjuice, pomegranate and pomegranate juice. Talk to your health care providerabout any potential risks.

2) Milk, cheese, butterand eggs - Choose fat-free (skim) or low-fat (1%) milk. Choosefat-free, low-fat or reduced-fat cheeses.

Avoid milk that contains added flavoringssuch as vanilla, chocolate or strawberry. They usually have added sugars andcalories.

Use egg whites or egg substitutes instead ofegg yolks. (Substitute two egg whites for each egg yolk in recipes that callfor eggs.)

Choose soft margarines that contain “0 gramstrans fat” instead of buying butter. (These margarines usually come in tubs.)

Stay away from buying a lot of butter, creamand ice cream. Save those for special occasions and, even then, limit how muchyou eat. These foods have more saturated fat than whole milk.

3) Meat, poultry, fishand nuts - Buy and prepare more fish. Try to eat oneserving of grilled or baked fish at least twice a week. (A serving is roughlythe size of a checkbook.) Good examples of fish to buy include salmon, troutand herring. Choose lemon juice and spices to eat with fish. Skip the creamsauces. And try to stay away from fried fish. It’s usually high in fat — oftentrans fat.

Choose cuts of red meat and pork labeled“loin” and “round”; they usually have the least fat. Buy “choice” or “select”grades of beef rather than “prime,” and trim off the fat before cooking.

When buying or eating poultry, choose the leanerlight meat (breasts) rather than the fattier dark meat (legs and thighs). Trythe skinless version or you can remove the skin yourself.

Pick up nuts and seeds, which are good sources ofprotein and polyunsaturated andmonounsaturated fats – but remember, they tend to be high in calories, so eatthem in moderation.

4) Bread & Baked Goods - Choose whole-grain,high-fiber breads, such as those containing whole wheat, oats, oatmeal, wholerye, whole grain corn and buckwheat. Choose breads and other foods that listwhole grains as the first item in the ingredient list.

Try to limit the amount of bakery products youpurchase, including doughnuts, pies, cakes and cookies. Look instead forfat-free or low-fat and low-sodium varieties of crackers, snack chips, cookiesand cakes.

Remember that moststore-baked goods are made with egg yolks, saturated fats and/or trans fats. Checkfor store-baked goods that are made with polyunsaturated or monounsaturatedoils, skim or reduced-fat milk, and egg whites — or make your own.

5) Oils, Dressings & Shortenings - Buy and usefats and oils in limited amounts. When you must use oils for cooking, baking orin dressings or spreads, choose the ones lowest in saturated fats, trans fatsand cholesterol — including canola oil, corn oil, olive oil, safflower oil,sesame oil, soybean oil and sunflower oil. Also, buy a nonstick pan or use nonstick vegetable spray when cooking.

Try to not use palm oil, palm kernel oil, coconutoil and cocoa butter. Even though they are vegetable oils and have no cholesterol,they’re high in saturated fats.

Choose reduced-fat, low-fat, light or fat-freesalad dressings (if you need to limit your calories) to use with salads, fordips or as marinades.

Meet Charlie. He is a 6 year old Shih Tzu and is 13 pounds ofpersonality. The tongue is real (birthdefect) and does not mind using it. Charlie occasionally visits the Rainefacility where he spends his time sleeping, begging for food and markingvarious spots around the building. So far, most of the bushes, the east andnorth sides of the building have been marked. Overall, Charlie has been wellreceived by everyone. No one yet has confused him for the Charlie in thewarehouse.

Recap of the 2012 SHOT Show

The 2012 SHOT Show, in sunny Las Vegas, concluded last week. By all accounts and comments it was a record-breaker for many vendors. We have expanded to a 10' x 20' booth to allow our customers more space and to make our booth presentation more inviting, and all the comments were positive in this regard.

There was more traffic at this show than we have ever seen as evidenced by the 8 pounds of life savers and probably 170 catalogs Raine distributed which far exceeds anything we have done previously.

As with any show or event we do, the most important thing we accomplish is to look our customers in the eye and say a genuinely felt thank you. Without their support there would be no Raine Inc. Army Navy Military Expo January 15 – 18, 2012

The ANMExpo was held at the Tuscany Casino & Suites in Las Vegas again this year. This expo is expanding by leaps & bounds. The entire 2^nd floor was sold out for the expo this year with a waiting list for vendors already in place for next year. It was a great show for Raine Inc. We offered several show specials and a lot of closeout products at really great prices. We also displayed two new products that went over so well that they are in production and will be part of our product line from now on: the #052P3H – Horizontal Smartphone Pouch and the #012RTL – Combo Radio/Tactical Light Pouch. We will add both of these products to our website soon.

If you have not had an opportunity to attend the ANMExpo, you really should try to attend next year. This show is tagged onto the SHOT Show so you can come in a day or so early and attend this show before the SHOT Show begins. The ANMExpo is very reminiscent of our days back at the Hilton. This is an ARMY NAVY show and all the vendors are related to that market. It was great seeing a lot of old friends that we haven’t seen in years. Word is getting around about the type of show this is.

Las Vegas is not for everyone but I love it. In my opinion, there is nothing more beautiful than the Las Vegas strip at night. I am amazed by it every time. If you haven’t been because you are thinking “I am not a gambler”, you are missing out. I mean where else in the world can you be and see the New York skyline, an Egyptian pyramid, ancient Rome, listen to an Italian serenade while floating in a gondola through Venice, witness a swashbuckling pirate adventure, a volcano erupting and so much more in an area of less than five miles! I am not even talking about everything there is to do and see off of the strip. There are amazing restaurants, shopping, shows and more. I guess I get a little excited when I talk about Vegas. Can you tell that it truly is my favorite place?

Americans consume approximately 16 billion quarts of this whole grain, good-for-you treat. That’s 51 quarts per man, woman, and child.

Popcorn is listed as a sugar free snack by the American Dental Association. It is low in calories along with apples, cheese, pears, nuts and plain yogurt.

Popcorn is a type of maize (or corn), a member of the grass family and is a whole grain.

Most U.S. popcorn is grown in the Midwest, primarily in Indiana, Nebraska, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri.

Many people believe the acres of corn they see in the Midwest during growing season could be picked and eaten for dinner, or dried and popped. In fact, those acres are typically field corn, which is used largely for livestock feed, and differs from both sweet corn and popcorn.

The peak period for popcorn sales for home consumption is in the fall.

Most popcorn comes in two basic shapes when it's popped: snowflake and mushroom. Snowflake is used in movie theaters and ballparks because it looks and pops bigger. Mushroom is used for candy confections because it doesn't crumble.

How high can popcorn kernels pop? Up to 3 feet in the air.

The English colonists ate popcorn at the first Thanksgiving feast in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It was brought as a gift by the chief's brother. The colonists ate the popcorn with milk and sugar. This is the first known breakfast cereal.

Kettle corn was first introduced in the early 1700's. The Settlers would pop the popcorn in large cast iron kettles. They would use rendered lard and whatever sweetener they had on hand. Many times it was molasses, honey or sugar cane.

Microwave popcorn was first discovered in 1945. Perry Spencer discovered that popcorn would pop when placed near a microwave. Mr. Spencer led the way to development of the microwave oven.

Popping popcorn is one of the number one uses for microwave ovens. Most microwave ovens have a "popcorn" control button.

Popcorn is enjoyed in many different flavors in other parts of the world. Germany, Luxemburg, Switzerland and Belgium like their popcorn sweet. Americans love their popcorn with salt and butter and a slew of sweet coatings. The Japanese eat their popcorn with seaweed or shrimp flavorings.

SHOT Show In Vegas

Once again it’s time for the annual SHOT Show in Las Vegas. If you have not attended this event, it is one that all retailers involved in selling military or law enforcement products should visit. The law enforcement segment is the fastest growing segment of the show. When we started exhibiting as a charter exhibitor in the new segment, there were about three rows of vendor booths in the basement of the Sands Convention Center. Now it takes up two ballrooms and the whole bottom floor of the Venetian Hotel. It is almost too much to see in the short time we’re there. If you try to see all the booths, it most certainly is too much (unless you plan to run through it).

We are there with our duty gear for law professionals and our military items for today’s warrior. We have a variety of new products we will be showcasing at our booth. Much of our line hasn’t changed so you can still see all the high quality gear we have always provided. We hope all our existing customers and anyone new to us will stop by and visit us in booth 20656.

If you are interested in seeing what Raine has to offer in regard to overstocks and closeouts as well as our first line quality products, you can visit our booth at the Tuscany Resort where we will be displaying in the ANMExpo. Our booth there is 402.

What Does the New Year Mean?

Celebrating the new year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first practiced in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon (actually the first visible crescent) after the Vernal Equinox (the first day of spring).

The beginning of spring is a reasonable time to start a new year. Besides, it is the season of rebirth, of planting new crops, and of blossoming. January 1, in contrast, has no astronomical or agricultural significance. It is absolutely arbitrary.

Bringing Luck
Traditionally, it was believed that someone could influence the luck they would have throughout the coming year by what they did or ate on the first day of the year. For that reason, it has become common for people to celebrate the first few minutes of a brand new year with family and friends. Parties often last until the middle of the night after the ringing in of a new year. It was once thought that the first visitor on New Year's Day would bring either good luck or bad luck the rest of the year. It was particularly lucky if that visitor happened to be a tall dark-haired man.

Traditional New Year foods are also thought to bring luck. Many cultures believe that anything in the shape of a ring is good luck, because it symbolizes "coming full circle," completing a year's cycle. As a result, the Dutch believe that eating donuts on New Year's Day will bring good fortune.

Many parts of the United States celebrate the new year by eating black-eyed peas. These legumes are usually accompanied by either hog jowls or ham. Black-eyed peas and other legumes have been considered good luck in many cultures. The hog, and thus its meat, is considered lucky because it symbolizes prosperity. Cabbage is another "good luck" vegetable that is consumed on New Year's Day by many. Cabbage leaves are also considered a sign of prosperity, being representative of paper currency. In some regions, rice is a lucky food that is eaten on New Year's Day.

Nylon vs. Canvas

When I first got into this business in 1986, nylon was still being introduced into the military. Nylon was being sold as a light weight, water resistant substitute for cotton canvas, the main material used for gear in the 19^th century up through the mid 20^th century. Even in the mid 1980’s, there was still resistance from the “old timers” against nylon arguing it made too much noise. The same argument was made against the use of Velcro®. They also liked the smell of canvas.

Today, all uniforms and most gear are made of nylon and use some Velcro. Because of this, gear is lighter and stronger than it used to be while the smell and sound of canvas took a back seat.

What MOLLE Gear Is All About

Raine’s Warrior Combat Gear is designed for the MOLLE attachment system. MOLLE is an acronym for MOdular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment. It is used to define the current generation of load-bearing equipment and rucksacks utilized by the U.S. armed forces and its use is also growing in the British Army in the form of the Osprey Modular systems.

The system's modularity is derived from the use of PALS webbing, rows of heavy-duty nylon stitched onto the vest and to allow for attachment of various MOLLE-compatible pouches and accessories. This method of attachment has become a de facto standard for modular tactical gear, replacing the click and stick system used in the earliest modular vest systems (which is still in use with most Western police departments).

Raine’s MOLLE attachment can also be converted to a belt mounting configuration.

It’s All in the Details: Raine’s Military Sewing Kit

When I acquired this company 25 years ago, there were only 36 products. One of those items was the Military Sewing Kit. Not being in the military, I wondered why tough soldiers would want a sewing kit. It did not take much thinking to determine that perhaps they may tear things in the field and need to have those things repaired. Right off the bat, the Military Sewing Kit was one of our best sellers. It consists of a small compact nylon zippered case with three pockets, a spool of thread, sewing needles, pins, replacement buttons and folding scissors. The case fits easily in any pocket or pouch and can be easily refilled.

To me, the sewing kit was a big hassle. It required a meticulous effort to sort and pack very tiny items and at first, we could not find an affordable set of high quality folding scissors. I remember I had to assemble everything from scratch myself for a rush order to the Marine Corps 25 years ago. We fixed all those problems and today the Raine Sewing Kit is a major seller in the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps exchanges.

The occasion Americans generally call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated to give thanks to God for guiding them safely to the New World. The first Thanksgiving extensive feast lasted for three days, offering enough food for 13 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans. The feast consisted of fish (cod, eels, and bass) and shellfish (clams, lobster, and mussels), wild fowl (ducks, geese, swans, and turkey), venison, berries and fruit, vegetables (peas, pumpkin, beetroot and possibly, wild or cultivated onion), harvest grains (barley and wheat), and the Three Sisters: beans, dried Indian maize or corn, and squash. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings"—days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought.

I attended the Industrial Fabrics Association International’s (IFAI) Advanced Textile Americas conference. This is the largest textile trade show in the United States and was held in Baltimore on October 25-27^th.

I enjoy going to this annual conference as you find out about the changes in the marketplace, learn about new hardware and fabrics used in products, observe new types of machinery and the overall networking opportunities.

The key points I learned were:

1) Raine is using a new, environmentally conscience EVA foam which retains less moisture. I learned how to cut the foam material in an efficient way and find a broader range of ways to utilize automation. Prior to that, we were having issues of the foam burning in production and having to hand cut the material.

In Development: PVS 14 Night Vision Optical System

In Development: Eyeshield Pouch

– Raine is currently working on products using this EVA foam which include the PVS 14 Night Vision Optical System and Eyeshield Pouch. Products are being developed for 1^st Quarter 2012.

2) Raine is working on a new project for the military and finding out dealers who can provide the computerized machinery at a reasonable cost.

3) New standards were learned on rejected goods going through production and keeping tolerances at a limited level.

I am always trying to find better ways to develop products for our clients.

When did Veterans Day begin?

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as "the Great War." Celebrated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. Following World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

Where on the Map is Raine Inc?

Raine Inc. is located in Anderson, Indiana. Anderson is a small city located 25 miles northeast of Indianapolis. From the early 1900’s to the 1990’s, Anderson hosted Delco Remy, GM and Guide Lamp (later Fisher Guide) who were the top employers in the city. All have now moved out of Anderson and took with them the 30000+ high paying blue collar jobs they employed. Needless to say, the city is trying to rebound while hurting economically and needing to diversify its’ business base.

Raine Inc. is proud to be part of the Anderson, Indiana economic rebound. We moved to Anderson in 1994 to occupy a 4000 sq. foot building on five acres of land with city utilities. This situation is ideal for expansion. The first 9000 sq.ft. expansion took place in 1996 and the second 9000 sq.ft. expansion took place in 2002. The building is constructed so the back wall can be removed and built onto. Needless to say, Raine has plenty of flexibility for growth and plans on staying in Anderson for the long haul.

Twenty-four years ago when I was looking at businesses to buy, I wanted get into something that added a high level of value to a product that was of tremendous quality. It was very important to me to have a customer be happy with a Raine product long after the purchase. This goal is more challenging in the military market since gear is subjected to very tough field conditions on a daily basis.

We have learned over the years where stitching must be reinforced for maximum wear – absolutely no products are built in obsolescence. Finally, each product is built with the proper material to withstand tough field conditions and to minimize its weight.

In the end, you will find that Raine products are tough but very affordable. That is the main reason we have been around for over 24 years.
